What Is Monel 405?

What Is Monel 405?

Monel 405 (or R-405) is an easy-to-machine grade of Monel. Monel is a group of nickel-copper alloys known for their excellent corrosion resistance and high strength. Monel 405 has improved machinability due to the addition of a small amount of sulfur (0.025-0.060%) compared to R-400, which is otherwise identical to R-400.

The composition of Monel 405 typically consists of approximately 63% nickel and 28-34% copper. It also contains small amounts of carbon, iron, manganese, silicon and sulfur. The added sulfur in Monel 405 causes the formation of nickel-copper sulfides, which enhances its machinability and makes it easier to process.

Monel 405 exhibits excellent corrosion resistance, making it suitable for use in marine environments, chemical processing plants, aerospace, electrical equipment, and the oil and gas industry. Commonly used in pump shafts, propeller shafts, seawater valves, heat exchangers, fasteners, electrical connectors and other components.

Monel 405 is mainly used as raw material for automatic screw machines. It is subject to various standards and specifications, including ASME SB-164, ASTM B-164, and Federal QQ-N-281. For more information, see our What is Monel guide.
