1.4404 is a lower carbon grade of 1.4401 steel. It exhibits good acid resistance. It is not susceptible to grain boundary carbide precipitation and therefore is not affected by sensitization. It is primarily used for welded parts thicker than 0.2 inches. The austenitic structure also provides the solid toughness of these stainless grades, also at lower temperatures down to absolute zero (-273 degrees Celsius).
Also known as 316L stainless steel, 1.4404 has a lower carbon content than its family grade 1.4401 steel. Despite its lower carbon content, 1.4404 is very similar to 1.4401 in most commercial and industrial applications. Importantly, the two related grades also cost almost the same, have a long service life, excellent corrosion resistance, and are an excellent choice for stress center type applications.
