Is All 400 Series Stainless Magnetic?

‌400 series stainless steel is mostly magnetic. 400 series stainless steel mainly includes martensitic and ferritic stainless steel, which are magnetic because they contain high carbon and iron elements. ‌

‌Martensitic stainless steel: such as 410, 420, 440C, etc. These stainless steels are magnetic and can be hardened by heat treatment to achieve high hardness, high strength and high wear resistance. ‌Ferritic stainless steel: such as 430, these stainless steels are also magnetic and suitable for use in high temperature environments, but they cannot be hardened and have low tensile strength. ‌

400 series stainless steel characteristics and applications ‌400 series stainless steel has a higher carbon content, providing higher strength and wear resistance. Ferritic stainless steel is sometimes difficult to weld or process, but can be hardened by cold working; martensitic stainless steel can be hardened by heat treatment. ‌

Common 400 series stainless steel varieties and their applications include: ‌

410‌: Suitable for hydraulic engineering, environmental protection technology, pump industry. ‌

420‌: Suitable for resin molds, mechanical tools, ball bearings. ‌ ‌

430‌: Suitable for automatic mechanical building parts, decoration.
‌440C‌: Suitable for high stress parts, knives‌.

Differences from other types of stainless steel
Compared with 304 stainless steel, 400 series stainless steel is magnetic, while 304 stainless steel is not magnetic. 304 stainless steel is austenitic stainless steel, while 400 series is martensitic or ferritic stainless steel‌.
In addition, 400 series stainless steel contains almost no nickel, so it is not as corrosion resistant as 300 series, but has better strength and wear resistance advantages‌.
