Is 1.4404 stainless steel 316L?

1.4404 and 316L stainless steel are the same materials, with similar chemical composition, mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, processing properties and welding properties. They are widely used in chemical, marine engineering and other industries.
The two are very similar in terms of chemical composition, mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, processing properties and welding properties.

1.4404vs316L stainless steel chemical composition

1.4404 and 316L stainless steel have basically the same chemical composition, both containing alloy elements such as chromium, nickel, molybdenum. Specifically, the chromium content is between 16.5% and 18.5%, the nickel content is between 10.0% and 13.0%, the molybdenum content is between 2.00% and 2.50%, the carbon content is maximum of 0.03%, and the silicon does not exceed 1.00%. Manganese should not exceed 2.00%.

The tensile strength of both in annealed state is usually between 500MPa-700MPa.
The yield strength is also relatively similar, and the yield strength is about ≥177MPa in general.
The elongation δ5≥40%, which is basically the same in this regard, and both have good plasticity and toughness.

1.4404vs316L stainless steel corrosion resistance

Equally excellent: 1.4404 and 316L stainless steel have excellent corrosion resistance, especially in chloride-containing environments, which perform excellent in preventing pitting, crevice and intergranular corrosion, and can resist the erosion of many chemicals, including Acetic acid, nitric acid, phosphoric acid and sulfuric acid, etc.

No preheating is required: Both welding performance is excellent, usually preheating is not required, and various welding methods such as TIG, MIG, arc welding, etc. can be used.
Filling material: Generally, welded using the same 316L type filler material as the base material to ensure that the performance of the welded joint is similar to that of the base material.

1.4404vs316L stainless steel application field

1.4404 stainless steel is widely used in chemical, marine engineering, food processing, pharmaceutical, medical equipment and other industries, and is used to manufacture various corrosion-resistant and high-temperature-resistant equipment and parts, such as chemical equipment, storage tanks, heat exchangers, pipelines, valves , surgical instruments, implants, etc.
