321 Stainless Steel (UNS S32100) is a titanium stabilized austenitic stainless steel with increased resistance to intergranular corrosion. This grade is suitable for high temperature applications up to 1500°F (815°C), where the addition of titanium stabilizes the material and prevents chromium carbide formation. Because titanium has a stronger affinity for carbon than chromium, titanium carbide precipitates within the grains rather than forming at grain boundaries. While corrosion resistance in the annealed condition is similar to 304 and 304L, it has higher creep and stress rupture characteristics. These properties make it ideal for pressure vessel and boiler applications. 321 stainless steel is non-magnetic and heat-resistant, allowing for continuous use at high temperatures.

Type 321 is an austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel containing titanium recommended for parts fabricated by welding that cannot be subsequently annealed. Type 321 is a stabilized austenitic stainless steel similar to Type 304 but with the addition of titanium. This titanium addition reduces or prevents the precipitation of carbides during welding and during use at temperatures between 800 - 1500 °F (427 - 816 °C). It also improves the alloy's high-temperature properties. Type 321 has excellent oxidation and corrosion resistance and has good creep strength.

Corrosion resistance
Equivalent to Grade 304 steel in the annealed condition, with better performance if weldments of these grades are not post-weld annealed or if the application involves work in the 425-900 °C range. Pitting and crevice corrosion are prone to occur in warm chloride environments, and stress corrosion cracking can occur above about 60 °C. Tolerates drinking water with chloride contents up to approximately 200 mg/L at ambient temperature, reducing to approximately 150 mg/L at 60 °C.

heat resistance
Good oxidation resistance in intermittent operation at 900 °C and continuous operation at 925 °C. These grades perform well in the 425-900 °C range, especially where water corrosive conditions are subsequently present. 321H has higher thermal strength and is particularly suitable for high temperature structural applications.

heat treatment
Solution Treating (Annealing) - Heating to 950-1120 °C and cooling rapidly for maximum corrosion resistance.

Stabilization - Heat to 870-900 °C for 1 hour per 25mm thickness, then air cool. Stabilization is recommended for the most severe service conditions (above 425 °C), especially for materials annealed at the upper end of the annealing temperature range.

Stress Relief - Heat to 700 °C for 1 to 2 hours and air cool.

These grades cannot be hardened by heat treatment.

welding
Excellent weldability by all standard fusion methods, with or without filler metal. AS 1554.6 prequalifies welding of 321 and 347 with 347 grade electrodes or rods; high silicon versions of 347 are also prequalified for 321 welding.
