Grade 409 stainless steel is a ferritic steel with good mechanical properties and resistance to high temperature corrosion. It is generally considered a chromium stainless steel and is used in automotive exhaust systems and applications requiring weldability.

Grade 409 steel is also available in highly stable forms such as grades S40930, S40920 and S40910. The stability of these steel grades is provided by the presence of niobium, titanium or both in the steel composition.

Type 409 is a heat-resistant ferritic stainless steel with good oxidation and corrosion resistance compared to carbon steel. This titanium-stabilized grade was developed for automotive exhaust systems, but its good formability, weldability and corrosion resistance allow it to be used in other applications. The corrosion resistance of Type 409 is better than coated carbon steel, similar to Type 410 stainless steel, but lower than Type 304/304L stainless steel. Type 409 is not recommended for decorative or surface critical applications as light surface rust may develop when exposed to atmospheric conditions.

Post-weld annealing from 1400 to 1499oF improves weld ductility
No post-weld annealing required when welding thin sections
Automobile exhaust pipes are usually welded without filler metal
