Stainless steel is high alloy steel. Due to their high chromium content (approximately 4-30%), they have high corrosion resistance. Based on their crystal structure, they are divided into three types: ferritic steel, austenitic steel and martensitic steel.

Grade 434 stainless steel has molybdenum added to improve its corrosion resistance. Its properties and chemical composition are similar to 430 stainless steel.

Type 434 is a ferritic stainless steel. This means that its annealed microstructure consists of ferrite and spheroidal carbides. Ferrite is an iron-based alloy that solidifies in a body-centered cubic (BCC) lattice. Strength cannot be increased by heat treatment. Like other stainless steels, 434 steel is characterized by corrosion resistance and strength. These properties mean that 434 stainless steel is a mid-range ferritic stainless steel that offers a good balance between cost and corrosion resistance for less demanding applications. This enables 434 stainless steel to be used in low to moderately demanding corrosive environments and in a variety of industrial and high temperature applications. Its corrosion resistance, toughness and weldability increase with the increase of chromium content, and its chloride stress corrosion resistance is better than other types of stainless steel. 434 (18Cr-1Mo) is an improved steel type of 430 steel. It is more salt-resistant than 430 steel and is used in automobile exterior decoration materials. Corresponds to the national standard 1Cr17Mo and the Japanese standard SUS434.
