Grade 904 stainless steel is a non-stabilized austenitic stainless steel with low carbon content. This high-alloy stainless steel has copper added to improve its resistance to strong reducing acids such as sulfuric acid. The steel is also resistant to stress corrosion cracking and crevice corrosion. Grade 904 is non-magnetic and offers excellent formability, toughness and weldability.

Grade 904 contains a lot of expensive ingredients such as molybdenum and nickel. Today, most applications using grade 904 have been replaced by the low-cost duplex stainless steel 2205.

904 is an austenitic stainless steel. It is softer than 316L, but has added molybdenum, giving it excellent resistance to localized attack by chlorides (pitting and crevice corrosion) and greater resistance to acids; in particular, its copper addition makes it resistant to all concentrations Sulfuric acid has useful corrosion resistance.
