1.4404 Polished stainless Steel Pipe

Type 1.4401 and 1.4404 stainless steel are also known as grades 316 and 316L respectively. Grade 316 is the austenitic grade second only to 304 in commercial importance.
316 stainless steel has added molybdenum, which improves corrosion resistance. This is especially true for pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments.
316L is a lower carbon version of 316 stainless steel and is not affected by grain boundary carbide precipitation (sensitization). This makes it suitable for use with large format (approximately 6mm+) welded components.
For high temperature applications, the high carbon variant, 316H stainless steel and stabilized grade 316Ti stainless steel should be used.
The austenitic structure of 316 stainless steel provides excellent toughness even at low temperatures.
The property data given in this document are typical of the rod and profile products covered by EN 10088-3:2005. ASTM, EN, or other standards may cover all products sold. It is reasonable to expect that the specifications in these standards will be similar but not necessarily identical to the specifications given in this data sheet.

316Ti stainless steel contains a small amount of titanium. The titanium content is usually only about 0.5%. Titanium atoms stabilize the structure of 316 at temperatures in excess of 800°C. This prevents carbides from precipitating at grain boundaries and protects the metal from corrosion. The main advantage of 316Ti is that it can be maintained at higher temperatures for longer periods of time without sensitization (precipitation). 316Ti retains similar physical and mechanical properties to the standard 316 grade.

product feature
Corrosion resistance
Grade 316 offers excellent corrosion resistance when exposed to a range of corrosive environments and media. It is generally considered "marine grade" stainless steel, but is not resistant to warm seawater. Warm chloride environments can cause pitting and crevice corrosion. Grade 316 also exhibits stress corrosion cracking at temperatures above about 60°C.

heat resistance
316 has good oxidation resistance in intermittent operation at 870°C and continuous operation at 925°C. However, if corrosion resistance in water is required, continuous use at 425-860°C is not recommended. In this case, 316L is recommended as it resists carbide precipitation.

If high strength is required at temperatures above 500°C, grade 316H is recommended.

manufacture
All stainless steel manufacturing can only be done using tools specific to stainless steel materials. Tools and work surfaces must be thoroughly cleaned before use. These precautions are necessary to avoid cross-contamination of stainless steel with easily corroded metals that may discolor the surface of the finished product.
application
316 stainless steel was originally developed for use in paper mills and is now commonly used in:

food processing equipment

brewery equipment

Chemical and petrochemical equipment

Experimental bench and equipment

coastal building paneling

coastal railing

Marine accessories

Chemical shipping containers

heat exchanger

mining screen

Nuts and Bolts

springs

medical implants
